Professional Experience
Arizona Daily Star: May 2006 – September 2008
Daily morning newspaper published in Tucson, Arizona. Circulation 113,000 daily, 164,000 Sunday. Covers the Tucson metro area and southern Arizona.
• Designer: Designed metro, business, and weekly neighborhood zones. Optimized the annual top 200 employer guide produced the Star, resulting in a reduction from 40 to 36 pages while increasing the amount of useful editorial content. Organized and designed two 12-to-24 page tabloid sections that were distributed in the newspaper and at various locations around the city for free.
Sun Journal: December 2004 – April 2006
Daily newspaper published in Lewiston, Maine. Circulation 32,200. Covers the cities of Lewiston and Auburn and western Maine.
• Design editor: Designed A1, special projects, metro and wire pages and also served as wire/slot editor. Awarded grant to attend annual Society of News Design conference, then trained staff in issues taught at the conference. Won six Awards of Excellence from the Society of News Design for work produced at the Sun Journal, including overall portfolio.
Bristol Herald Courier: July 2003 – December 2004
Daily newspaper published in Bristol, Virginia. Circulation 38,000. Covers the cities of Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia, southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee.
• Features writer: Designed pages for three weekly features publications. Wrote a weekly consumer column, one centerpiece story per month and other stories as needed by both news and features. Assisted with special projects as needed.
Selma Times Journal: July 2002 – July 2003
Newspaper published Sundays through Fridays in Selma, Alabama. Circulation 8,400. Covers the city of Selma and Dallas County.
• Copy editor: Designed A1, metro, wire, features, sports, special projects, and ads. Primary writer for the features section and worked on general assignment reporting as needed.
